Harp"Breathtaking harp playing" |
Gillian was awarded a scholarship to study with Marisa Robles at The Royal College of Music when she was 15, and was a finalist for the first BBC Young Musician of the Year competition.
Gillian gives solo, duo and chamber recitals and has a busy concerto schedule of classical and modern works. Recent engagements have included concertos with The Budapest String Orchetra, the Orchestra of St. John's Smith Square, the Northern Sinfonia, the Bournemouth Sinfonietta and the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra.
Gillian opened the World Harp Festival in 1991 with Marisa Robles, and in the 1994 Festival gave the premiere of Malecki's double harp concerto, and also performed J M Damase's Concertino, in the presence of both composers. In 1994 she performed the Mozart Flute and Harp Concerto with James Galway at the Hampton Court Palace Festival.
Gillian broadcasts regularly on Radio 3, Classic FM and on television. Her busy recital schedule has included concerts with such groups as Jeux, Lontano, Endymion, the Debussy Trio, the Fibonacci Sequence and the Chamber Music Players of London. She has appeared in Festivals such as the City of London, Ryedale, Cricklade, Salisbury, the Three Choirs, Lichfield, and Kings Lynn. In 1994 she gave a recital at the first Arts Festival held in Beirut for twenty years.
Gillian's numerous CD recordings include the flute and harp works of J M Damase with her duo partner Anna Noakes, which was Critic's Choice in Gramophone Magazine, and a "Fantasie Album" of works for flute and harp on the ASV label. Following the success of this CD Gillian and Anna have been invited to make a recording of British Flute and Harp Music early next year.
A flute and harp concerto by Dave Heath is to be specially written for Anna and Gillian this year, and a series of performances of the new work will follow throughout the year 2000/2001.
"Gillian is a great musician, I greatly admire her. She plays with great spirit and brilliant technique ... the world needs players like her"
